Plotting departure strategy

The harbormaster at our next stop of Demopolis, AL advised boaters to stay put due to flooding until next Wednesday when the water should be back down to somewhat normal. Below Demopolis the Black Warrior River is still 20-25’ above normal pool. He advised if you do decide to risk it, and leave, do it in groups in case someone has trouble. It is really difficult to sit here and not see the situation first hand so we could make our own decision. After 9 nights at Pirates Cove Marina, we think we could venture out tomorrow, but more likely Monday. We’ll have to negotiate one lock and a one night anchorage for 2nd day arrival at Demopolis.

More boats came in yesterday and we had an early afternoon social get together on shore. We also had the pleasure of meeting Steve and Liz Kemper aboard “Shingebiss” Newport, MN located on the Miss River MM 830.9. They shared with us that they had a pleasant overnight stop at LPYC, Davenport, IA on their way down the Mississippi River. It makes us proud to hear that loopers were treated with mid-western hospitality at our yacht club. It is such a pleasure meeting new people and sharing nautical information.

Today we finally got off our duffs and did some boat work. After a big breakfast aboard we took advantage of the onsite laundry. Our friends Dave & Pam on “Adagio”, 42’ Ocean Alexander shamed us into doing soemthing since they work, work, and work. And their boat shows it! Tom applied Poli-Glow to additional areas on the side of the hull, incredible product. We also found time to run to town again and make a cell phone call or two. We want the boat ready to go on a moment’s notice since supplies will be scarce for the next 300 miles.
While drafting this blog we watched the Iowa – Ohio State game and just witnessed a sad unfortunate Iowa loss. Thinking of you Gary, Cindy and Blake and all you Iowa fans.
