We have been in New Bern for 10 days and every day we’ve had more than normal high winds. We had planned on departing Monday but after hearing the weather forecast predict 50 mph winds and storms we decided to wait another day.

We needed to test the new cable for the dinghy so we did take a long a dinghy ride on the Trent River. Everything worked the way we had hoped. The water on this river was very clean and there were some beautiful homes.
What a wonderful long week-end seeing members of my family. When they arrived on Friday we hung out on the boat with snacks and beverages. We had an excellent dinner Friday night at the Chelsea restaurant. On Sat we took a 90 minute narrated trolley tour through the historic district of New Bern.

On Sunday we toured the Tryon Palace and Gardens which is a replica of a 1770 home of the Royal Governor and is regarded as the finest public building of the American Colonies. The gardens are spectacular! Unfortunately we didn’t remember our camera. We walked to the Cow CafĂ© where we found locally made ice cream. Yummy! Of course we managed to find time to browse the stores. Since my sisters were here by car I managed to send home lots of Christmas presents that I had purchases along the way. Good thing they had a van.

New Bern is North Carolina’s first capital; home of the state’s first printing press, and home of the first motion picture theatre. I think I mentioned this is where Pepsi Cola was created and it is home to author Nicholas Sparks.
